This is a replica of one of the most famous and successful Camaros of all time. It is "The Lightweight" car fielded by Roger Penske and
driven by Mark Donohue to many victories, winning an amazing 10 of 13 Trans-Am races in 1968 along with the overall Trans-Am championship.
The car has a very colorful history that provides great entertainment for the race fan, definitely worth a read.
The car you see here has fewer than 500 miles. It is of very high quality and is the product of a full nut-and-bolt rotisserie
restoration. The project goal was to create a replica that remained street legal. It started with a solid '68 Camaro that was stripped to
bare metal; there was not a flake of rust remaining when this work was completed. The bottom of the car was completely finished in red
oxide paint. There is billet aluminum and custom work throughout, including the professionally fabricated 6-point roll cage with angled
sidebars for easy ingress/egress and a removable rear bar (in case anyone wants to ride in back).
Back in 1968 there was a 5.0L displacement limit, but not today. The new drivetrain consists of a wicked 454ci big-block. It sounds just
like a race car and must be heard to be believed; when you fire it up, every head will turn (if they're not already staring). Still, it
runs good on pump gas, and the huge radiator, aluminum water pump, and electric fan keep things in check. The motor is topped with a Torker
II manifold and Holley 830cfm carb, along with an HEI distributor. Take a look at the billet pulleys and brackets as well. The motor is
mated to a robust TH350 transmission with trans cooler that is shifted by a Hurst Pro-Matic 2 setup. This makes things much easier on the
street. The rear end is a brand new GM 12-bolt setup with 3.42 gears and hardened axles.
The front brakes are new Wilwood slotted and vented discs with 4-piston calipers, while the rears have newly rebuilt drums. New brake
lines are used throughout. The suspension has all new bushings and Competition Engineering shocks throughout, Hotchkis springs with a huge
stabilizer bar in front, and a monoleaf setup with traction bars in back. And you can't miss the new replica wheels and Hoosier DOT tires,
which really complete the look.
The exterior of the car is finished in a beautiful deep blue with vinyl graphics. The bodywork and paint really are exceptional and of
very high quality. Obviously this car really stands out in a crowd! There is a rear spoiler along with a custom front race valence and
billet window strap recreations that really add to the Trans-Am look, as do the rectangular exhaust outlets ahead of the rear wheels. A
fuel cell resides in the trunk, and the old fuel filler cap has been replaced with a billet piece.
The interior of the car continues the theme. Carpeting was omitted, and instead the floor and trunk were nicely finished in gray spatter
paint. The shifter cover was also left off, and a single race mirror is fastened to the roll cage while a fire extinguisher resides behind
the shifter. You'll feel ready to hit the track! Still, the car is quite comfortable to drive and has leather buckets up front with a
power driver's seat. There is a professionally installed headliner and new door panels with emblems. All glass is in excellent shape and
the windows and locks work as expected. The dash has a custom aluminum panel and houses Autometer Phantom gauges throughout; these really
look sharp.
The car has a complete new wiring harness from Rick's Camaro. It was put together to be street legal, so the headlights, turn signals,
wipers (arms not installed but are included), and brake lights all work perfectly. So does all the little stuff like the horn, turn signal
return, high beams, back-up lights, and neutral safety switch.
A tremendous effort was put into this car, and it has paid off with a beautiful replica of the most recognizable Camaro of all time. Even
with all the first generation Camaros out there, this one really stands out. It captures both the look and sound of "The Lightweight" and
will rival any other car in terms of quality. Whether you like to be different or just appreciate race history, this is a great way
to go.
