Here is a nice deal on a true classic.  This 1953 Mercury Custom sedan harkens back to the brand’s glory days, when upscale styling clearly distinguished Mercury from its less expensive Ford cousins.  It is a very sharp car that still turns heads today.  But underneath it is much like a Shoebox Ford, meaning it is straightforward and reliable with a good support network.  It all makes for an attractive car that offers a nice ride and is easy to live with, and at a price far below so many other classics.

This automobile shows 49,312 miles.  The underside and body are straight and solid without any signs of trauma.  Be sure to see the photos of the door jambs and undersides; they speak to the quality of this car.  The exterior wears an attractive repaint in its original code 12 Pinehurst Green.  Note the distinctive Mercury elements such as the simulated hood scoop and slant back rear end which help give this model some extra flair.  All the chrome and moldings appear original and are in exceptional condition for their age.  The 15” red steel wheels wear brand new radial tires along with the correct Mercury wheel covers.

Power comes from a 255 cubic inch Flathead V8.  This engine was factory rated at 125hp which was a bit higher than the 239ci / 110hp Ford versions thanks to the Mercury’s longer stroke and higher compression EAC heads.  The engine received a recent tune-up along with a rebuilt Holley 1904 carburetor.  This car is also equipped with a “Merc-O-Matic” 3-speed automatic transmission (which was their version of Ford’s “Cruise-O-Matic”).  Introduced in 1951, this was the first automatic transmission for both brands.  The car starts easily and runs smoothly, and it retains the factory 6V electrical system.  The brakes have recently been serviced with a new master cylinder, shoes, wheel cylinders, and hoses.  It also received a front-end alignment.

The two-tone interior is all stock with bench seats front and rear.  Most everything appears original and is in good to fair condition.  The door panels and headliner look great while the front bench cushion and floor mat show the most wear.  The dash is classic Mercury with a flat control panel and vertical levers mounted behind the steering wheel.  The headlights, turn signals, vacuum wipers, and heater all work properly, though the AM radio is just for looking at.  All glass is in good condition and all windows operate smoothly.  Also, the trunk is in good shape and includes a spare tire and bumper jack.

You seldom see these Mercury models on the road, and many people aren’t familiar with their great styling and brand upgrades.  This example appears to have led an easy life and hasn’t languished outside for the last 70 years.  Also note the Quaker State sticker on the door jamb calling out a mileage of 46,667 on 9-15-89, suggesting this car has seen fewer than 3,000 miles in the last 34 years!  With a lot of recent maintenance this one is ready for more driving and to keep the Mercury name going strong.
